It is gratifying to know that the secretary of state for work and pensions, James Purnell, is keen to offer support once someone has lost their job.

I am curious as to the training these newly unemployed people will receive. Will they be furnished with new skills to prepare them for alternative work that doesn’t exist due to the current climate?

one that included the words “horses” and “shutting stable doors”.

Many companies could be more readily prepared to meet the challenges ahead if they had the knowledge to do so. Could training be directed into areas of managing cash flow, motivating staff, diversification, managing changes, investigating export opportunities, to name a few?
