Over the past three years, business placed by the training sector with venue providers has been static at around £18 billion annually. Forecasts suggest there will only be marginal growth (around 0.4 per cent per annum) over the next three to four years.

Of course, those forecasts pre-date the recent economic cataclysm, which puts unprecedented pressures on businesses to cut costs. Where retrenchment is demanded, it is received knowledge that training budgets are the first to be cut.

So venues are, in theory at least, in for an even thinner time. I don’t see it like that. Economic pressures make it essential that every organisation has the skills that will steer them through. That means creating training events that are as effective as possible. In my view, that’s likely to enhance business prospects for those venues that best address that need.
